How Kempagowda Airport was formed

How Kempagowda Airport was formed

HAL was started in 1942 for military purposes, and it started domestic operations for the first time in the 1970s. In 1990, the first international flights started, and Air India was the first airline to offer flights to Singapore. In 2000, the first foreign airline started from HAL Airport, with Nepal Airlines, followed by A340 a year later.

As passenger traffic rose, HAL Airport, with a single runway, could not cope with the traffic. So, in 1991, a panel was selected to find the site for a new airport. The panel decided on the new area, which is about 30 kilometers north of the city. Then, plans were made to build the airport, which was approved in 1994.

Construction started in July 2005, was completed in 32 months, and the launch date was set to March 2008. But due to delays in control services at this airport, the launch date was pushed to 24 May 2008. Some services in the airport include

  • Full-service dining
  • Wheelchairs
  • Medical services
  • Baby care rooms
  • Refreshments and Duty-free shopping.
